Both microneedling & micropigmentation is ideal for light-coloured scars that are fully healed and lighter than the surrounding skin. Scars should typically be at least a year old to ensure the body has completed its natural healing process. A consultation is recommended to assess your skin and determine the best approach.

Some clients feel mild discomfort. Topical numbing is used to control discomfort if required. Clients say that having a procedure is comparable to having their eyebrows tweezered or their legs waxed.

The number of sessions needed depends on the treatment type and the size, depth, and condition of the scar.

Scar Camouflage Micropigmentation: Typically requires two sessions, spaced 4 weeks apart as the pigment needs time to settle, and a follow-up session ensures even coverage and colour blending.

Microneedling: Generally requires 3-4 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

Individual results may vary, and some scars may need additional treatments for optimal results. A consultation will help determine the best treatment plan based on your specific scar type and skin needs.

A common misconception is that scars can be completely removed, but in reality, no treatment can fully erase a scar. Instead, advanced techniques such as scar camouflage micropigmentation and microneedling can significantly improve the appearance of scars, making them less noticeable and blending them with the surrounding skin.

If a clinic or practitioner claims they can completely remove scars, they may not be providing honest or realistic expectations. The goal of professional scar treatments is to improve, not remove.

The NHS does not typically cover scar camouflage treatments for cosmetic reasons. Since scars do not pose a medical risk, procedures such as microneedling or scar camouflage micropigmentation are generally considered elective treatments and must be funded privately.

However, in some cases, if a scar is causing physical discomfort, restricting movement, or significantly impacting mental health, the NHS may offer limited treatment options, such as silicone gels or skin colour camouflage creams. A referral from a GP or specialist is usually required.

Recognise the relapse without self-blame, identify triggers, use established coping skills, reach out for professional support, and adhere to a safety plan.
