What is hair loss medication?
Hair loss medication refers to treatments specifically designed to prevent further hair loss and, in some cases, stimulate new hair growth. These medications typically target the underlying causes of hair loss, which can range from hormonal imbalances and genetic predispositions to nutritional deficiencies and certain medical conditions.
Currently there are only two FDA-approved medications for Genetic Hair Loss, Finasteride and Minoxidil. You may know these two medications as their most popular brand names, Propecia and Regaine.
Hair Loss Medication Consultation
If you are in the early stages of hair loss or have observed signs of damage to your hair or scalp and are considering medication but are unsure of your options, we recommend consulting one of our highly-experienced, fully qualified Trichologists.
Finasteride
Finasteride is a daily tablet exclusively for men that works by inhibiting the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This reduction in DHT levels makes Finasteride highly effective in controlling and preventing male hair loss. It is considered the most effective treatment for strengthening hair and halting further loss.
Minoxidil
Minoxidil, a topical lotion applied to the scalp twice daily, is suitable for both men and women. It's a vasodilator, although its exact mechanism for preventing hair loss is unclear. Minoxidil effectively slows damage from Dihydrotestosterone. Regaine, its most popular brand, is available as foam or lotion in 2% and 5% strengths. Side effects, primarily irritation from the lotion, are rare.
